The Akita Shepherd is an intentional cross, not a kennel-club breed with a single written standard. Two dogs from the same pairing can differ in size, coat, and temperament, because each puppy inherits a different mix of traits from the contributing breeds.

An Akita Shepherd mixes the Akita with the German Shepherd Dog. This is a large, powerful dog with a double coat, a substantial head, and ears that may stand or tip. Color often follows shepherd sable or the Akita's red, white, or brindle.
Both parents can be reserved with strangers and serious with other dogs of the same sex. This is not a casual first dog. Early, steady socialization and a handler who can manage a strong animal on a leash are the difference between a solid companion and a problem. The coat sheds heavily twice a year.
