The Africanis is a lean, lightly built landrace with a longish head, almond-shaped eyes, and a short coat.  The body is slightly longer than tall, with a tucked waist and a tail that is carried in a curve when the dog is alert.

A hardy African village dog who lives easily outdoors in warm weather, travels light on coat care, and wants a household that lets him patrol.

The Africanis is a Southern African village and hunting dog, shaped by climate and work rather than by a closed show standard.  These dogs have lived with Khoekhoe, Nguni, and other peoples for centuries as camp guards, hunters, and companions.  They are not a recent designer breed; they are a regional landrace that is still found around rural homesteads.

Temperament

The Africanis is alert, loyal to its household, and often reserved with strangers.  It is typically hardy and independent, with a strong hunting instinct.  Early socialization helps it live comfortably with other dogs and with livestock.

Training

This is a thinking village dog, not a drill-style obedience breed.  Short, consistent sessions and a job (watch, walk, or hunt) work better than harsh or repetitive training.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs only a weekly brush and an occasional bath.  These dogs were bred for heat and rough ground; they need regular exercise but not elaborate grooming.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

The Africanis is generally a hardy landrace with few breed-specific problems.  Parasite control and vaccination still matter, especially for rural or imported dogs.
