The Ariege Hound is a lean, elegant pack hound with a long head, long dropped ears, and a short white coat marked with black and tan. The outline is that of a light French scenthound, built for all-day work in hills.

A French pack hound with a short coat, a trail voice, and a need for long days in the field rather than city stillness.

The Ariege Hound, or Ariegeois, is a French pack hound from the Ariege department in the Pyrenees. It was developed to hunt hare and other small game over rough ground. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Temperament

These hounds are typically gentle at home and determined on a scent. They get along with other pack dogs when raised together. They are not quiet apartment dogs; they have a carrying voice.

Training

Train the recall early and use a long line. Once a scent is found, many Ariege Hounds will ignore everything else.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat and clean the long ears after work. They need a daily outing, not just a short yard break.

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections and pad injuries are the common working-dog issues; keep the ears dry.
