The Artois Hound is a well-muscled, short-legged-looking but still substantial French pack hound. It has a strong head, long ears, and a short tricolor coat.

A sturdy French scent hound with a short coat and a pack voice; happiest in a house that can offer miles of nose work.

The Artois Hound, also called the Chien d’Artois or Picard, is an old French scenthound from the Artois region. It was used in small packs on hare and other game. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Temperament

These hounds are typically good-natured with their own people and other pack dogs. They have a strong nose and a voice made to carry. They are happier with daily work than with idle house life.

Training

Be patient and reward the dog for checking in. Scent will beat a weak recall every time.

Care and grooming

Brush the short coat and clean the ears. Keep toenails short; this is a dog that works on rough ground.

Health

The Artois Hound is generally robust. Watch the ears for infection and keep the dog from becoming overweight.
