The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is a large, heavy-boned livestock guardian with a broad head, small dropped ears, and a thick coat. The body is powerful and the tail is thick and often carried in a curve.

A livestock guardian for land and a serious fence; a weather coat, night patrol, and no fit for close-quarters city life.

The Central Asian Shepherd Dog, or Alabai, is a livestock guardian from the steppes of Central Asia. It lived with flocks against wolves and thieves. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Temperament

This is a calm, independent guardian. It is typically loyal to its own people and reserved with strangers. It needs space and a role, not a busy suburban sidewalk.

Training

Start socialization early and be consistent. Harsh methods make this breed more stubborn, not more obedient.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often during sheds. Grow puppies slowly.

Shedding

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

Hip dysplasia and bloat can occur in this giant breed. Do not exercise hard right after meals.
