The Fresian Water Dog is a sturdy, slightly rectangular water dog with a dense curly coat on the body and a smoother coat on the head and legs. The head is strong, the ears are dropped, and the tail curls over the back.

A rare Dutch water dog with a dense coat that needs real care, a working voice, and a household that will swim or work him.

The Fresian Water Dog, better known as the Wetterhoun, is a Dutch water dog from Friesland. It was used on otter and as a farm watchdog. The spelling in this table follows the site listing; the usual English name is Frisian Water Dog. The UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

These dogs are typically reserved, loyal to their household, and independent. They can be suspicious of strangers. They need work, not just a fenced yard.

Be consistent and start socialization early. They think for themselves and do not enjoy endless drill.

Do not brush the curls out; keep them clean and separate mats with the fingers. Dry the ears after swimming.

Shedding

Low; loose hair is held in the curls.

Health

Wetterhouns may develop hip dysplasia and a serious skin condition (sterile pyogranuloma) in some lines. Ask breeders about health history.
