The German Rough-Haired Pointer is a large, strong pointing dog with a harsh, broken coat, a bearded muzzle, and dropped ears. The outline is more substantial than a German Shorthaired Pointer.

The German Rough-Haired Pointer, or Deutsch Stichelhaar, is the oldest of the German rough-coated pointing breeds. It is a versatile hunter used on land and in water. The UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Color: Brown; brown with white ticking; or light brown roan
Coat: Harsh, broken, and weather-resistant, with a beard and eyebrows

Temperament

These pointers are typically serious working dogs, loyal to their hunter and reserved with strangers. They need field work, not just a backyard.

Training

Be consistent and start bird work early. They think for themselves in cover.

Care and grooming

Brush the harsh coat weekly and strip it a few times a year. Dry the ears after water work.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally sturdy. Hip dysplasia and ear infections can occur, as in other pointing breeds.
