The German Spaniel is a medium, long-bodied flushing dog with a thick wavy coat, dropped ears, and a strong nose. It is built for dense cover, not for a refined show ring.

A sturdy flushing spaniel with a wavy coat of modest care, a hunting voice, and energy meant for cover and water.

The German Spaniel, or Deutscher Wachtelhund, is a German flushing and tracking spaniel used on birds and to follow wounded game. It is still mainly a hunter’s dog. The UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

These spaniels are typically friendly with their hunter, determined in cover, and too busy for a quiet lap-dog life. They need work and a chance to use their nose.

Training

Start retrieving and tracking early. They learn quickly when the work makes sense.

Care and grooming

Brush the thick coat weekly and dry the ears after work in wet cover.

Moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections and hip dysplasia can occur; keep the dog lean.
