The German Wirehaired Pointer is a medium-to-large, athletic gundog with a harsh, weather-resistant broken coat, a beard, and dropped ears.  The outline is that of a versatile hunter, built for field and water.

A wiry all-purpose gundog for an active house; beard and coat work, a field voice, and daily miles in rough country.

The German Wirehaired Pointer, or Deutsch Drahthaar, is a versatile German gundog used to point, retrieve, and track on land and in water.  The AKC places it in the Sporting Group; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

These pointers are typically loyal to their handler, reserved with strangers, and serious about work.  They need more exercise than a casual companion of the same size.  A bored wirehair will invent its own hunts.

Training

Be consistent and start bird and water work early.  They think in the field and do not enjoy pointless drill.

Care and grooming

Brush the harsh coat weekly and strip it a few times a year.  Dry the ears after swimming.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

German Wirehaired Pointers may develop hip dysplasia, ear infections, and von Willebrand disease in some lines.  Ask breeders about hip and blood-clotting tests.
