The Gordon Setter is a large, substantial setter with a long, shiny black-and-tan coat, a heavier head than the other setters, and abundant feathering. The outline is that of a strong bird dog, not a slight field trial waif.

A large black-and-tan bird dog for a house with land or long runs; a heavy coat that sheds, a soft house manner, and real field energy.

The Gordon Setter is the black-and-tan setter of Scotland, named for the Dukes of Gordon. It is a methodical bird dog, heavier than the Irish or English Setter. The AKC places it in the Sporting Group; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

Gordons are typically loyal, a little more reserved than an Irish Setter, and devoted to their household. They need field work or long runs. A bored Gordon becomes noisy or destructive.

Training

Be patient and consistent. They learn, but they do not hurry the way a Border Collie does.

Care and grooming

Brush the long coat several times a week so the feathering does not mat. Keep the ears clean.

Shedding

Moderate.

Health

Gordon Setters may develop hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and hypothyroidism. Ask breeders about hip and eye testing.
