The Greenland Dog is a powerful, rectangular northern sled dog with erect ears, a curled tail, and a dense stand-off coat. The outline is that of an Inuit working dog, built for ice and long distance, not for a house pet trim.

A polar freighting dog for cold space and a fence; a heavy coat, a howl, and no business as a hot-climate apartment pet.

The Greenland Dog, or Gronlandshund, is the sled and hunting dog of the Inuit in Greenland. It is one of the older Arctic working breeds and is still used on the ice. The UKC classes it as a Northern Breed.

Weight: 66–70 pounds and up
Color: Any color, solid or patched
Coat: Double; coarse standing outer coat with a dense, woolly undercoat
Lifespan: 10–14 years
Litter size: 4–6 puppies

Temperament

These dogs are typically independent, pack-oriented with other dogs, and reserved with strangers. They have a strong prey drive and need cold-weather work. They are not a first-time companion breed.

Training

Be consistent and give the dog a pulling or running job. Harsh methods make this breed more stubborn.

Care and grooming

Brush heavily when the undercoat blows. They overheat in warm climates and need shade and water.

Shedding

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep working dogs fit rather than overfed.
