The Hygen Hound is a medium, rectangular scenthound with a long head, dropped ears, and a short coat that is usually red-and-white or yellow-and-white. The body is sturdy, built for Norwegian forest work.

A Norwegian hunting hound with a short coat and a trail voice; built for endurance in rough country rather than apartment halls.

The Hygen Hound, or Hygenhund, is a Norwegian scenthound developed in the 19th century by Hans Hygen from several European hounds. It is used on hare. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Color: Red or yellow with white, or black-and-tan with white; white should not dominate
Coat: Short, straight, and glossy, with a dense undercoat

Temperament

These hounds are typically friendly with their hunter and determined on a track. They have a musical voice and will follow a scent out of an unfenced yard. They need more running than a short walk.

Wipe the short coat and clean the ears after work in cover.

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections are the issue most often seen after field work.
