The Kangal Dog is a large, powerful livestock guardian with a broad head, dropped ears, and a short fawn coat with a black mask. The body is heavy-boned and slightly longer than tall, built to live with a flock.

A livestock guardian for land and a serious fence; a short-to-medium coat, night patrol, and no business as a city apartment dog.

The Kangal Dog is a Turkish flock guardian from the Sivas region. It lives with sheep and goats and discourages wolves and strangers. It is related to other Anatolian livestock guardians but is kept as a distinct type in Turkey.

Temperament

This is a calm, independent guardian. It is typically devoted to its own household and reserved with strangers. It needs space and a role, not a busy suburban sidewalk.

Training

Socialize early and keep the rules quiet and firm. The breed was selected to think for itself on the steppe.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows. Grow this giant slowly.

Shedding

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

As with other giant guardians, hip dysplasia and bloat can occur. Do not exercise hard right after meals.
