The Lowchen is a small, square companion dog with a long coat that is traditionally clipped in a lion trim, leaving a mane and tufts on the legs and tail. The ears are dropped and well fringed.

A small companion who can live in an apartment; a long coat that needs regular grooming and a generally cheerful, only moderately vocal manner if kept close.

The Lowchen, or Little Lion Dog, is a small companion breed from continental Europe. The lion clip is traditional, not required for a house pet. The AKC places it in the Non-Sporting Group; the UKC classes it as a Companion Dog.

Temperament

Lowchen are typically lively, affectionate, and closely tied to their people. They can be vocal and do not enjoy being left alone all day. They are sturdier than they look.

Training

They learn tricks and household manners quickly. Keep sessions short and upbeat.

Care and grooming

Brush the long coat several times a week, whether it is in a lion clip or a puppy clip.

Shedding

Low; loose hair is held in the coat.

Health

Lowchen may develop patellar luxation and eye problems. Keep them lean and have the eyes checked.
