The Portuguese Podengo is a primitive warren hound that comes in three sizes (Small, Medium, and Large) and two coats (smooth and wire). All have erect ears, a wedge head, and a lean, athletic body.

A rabbit hound in several sizes who can live in a house or, in the small variety, an apartment; short or wire coat, a hunt voice, and a need for sprints.

The Portuguese Podengo is Portugal’s rabbit dog. Small dogs hunt in packs in thickets; larger dogs work more open ground. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Sighthound & Pariah.

Color: Yellow or fawn in any shade, with or without white
Coat: Smooth and short, or wire-haired and harsh, without a beard in the wire variety

Temperament

Podengos are typically alert, independent, and tied to their hunter. They have a strong prey drive and need more running room than a typical house pet. They can be reserved with strangers.

Training

Be patient and use a long line. A rabbit in motion will beat a weak recall.

Care and grooming

The smooth coat needs a weekly wipe; the wire coat needs occasional brushing.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Patellar luxation can occur in the small size; keep the dog lean.
