The Portuguese Sheepdog is a medium, rectangular herding dog with a long, slightly wavy goat-hair coat, a bearded face, and a long tail. The outline is rustic, and the coat should not look like a show Poodle.

A monkey-faced herder with a long coat that needs brushing, a watchful bark, and a job on a farm or in a serious yard.

The Portuguese Sheepdog, or Cao da Serra de Aires, is a herding breed from the plains of Portugal. It moved sheep and cattle and watched the farm. The UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.

Color: Yellow, brown, gray, fawn, or wolf gray; a small white mark on the chest is allowed
Coat: Long, slightly wavy, and goat-like, with no undercoat wool

Temperament

These shepherds are typically lively, watchful, and tied to their handler. They can be reserved with strangers and may try to herd children or other pets. They need a job.

Training

They learn quickly and remember inconsistent rules. Start herding or obedience work early.

Care and grooming

Brush the long coat several times a week so it does not mat.

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia and eye issues can appear; ask breeders about testing.
