The Russo-European Laika is a medium, square hunting spitz with erect ears, a curled tail, and a dense black-and-white or solid-colored coat. The outline is that of a forest hunting dog, not a sled team dog only.

The Russo-European Laika is a Russian hunting laika from the forests west of the Urals. It is used on squirrel, grouse, moose, and other game, and it trees or bays rather than packing like a scenthound. The UKC classes it as a Northern Breed.

Temperament

These laikas are typically independent, loyal to their hunter, and reserved with strangers. They have a strong prey drive and a ringing bark on game. They are not a quiet apartment breed.

Training

Train the recall early and give the dog a hunting job. Harsh methods make this breed shut down or leave.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, and daily when the undercoat blows.

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep working dogs fit rather than overfed.
